Dieline Bleed and Safe Zones Checklist for Multi-Sponsor Cup and Box Artwork
**Summary:** Multi-sponsor packaging fails prepress for predictable reasons: backgrounds stop at the trim, logos sit on fold lines, and barcodes land on glue flaps. This checklist covers the bleed, safe-zone, and dieline rules that let several brands share one cup or box without a last-minute artwork rebuild.

Why multi-sponsor artwork needs a stricter checklist
Single-brand artwork has one stakeholder to satisfy. Multi-sponsor artwork has three or more, each with brand guidelines, minimum sizes, and clear-space rules — layered on top of the same production physics that govern any printed package. When several marks compete for space, the temptation is to push each one closer to the trim, and that is exactly where die-cutting variance punishes the layout.
The fix is a checklist every stakeholder signs before artwork starts.
Bleed: extend every background past the trim
Bleed is artwork that extends beyond the final trim edge, so minor registration shifts during printing and die-cutting never leave unprinted white slivers at panel edges. The working standard on paperboard cartons and sleeves is about 1/8 inch (3 mm) beyond trim on all sides.
Two rules make bleed automatic:
- Solid background colors extend past every trimmed edge — never stop exactly at the trim line.
- Photographs and full-bleed imagery carry real image data out to the bleed boundary, not a fade to white.
On cups, the same logic applies to the curved dieline: backgrounds continue into the bleed zone so the wrap never shows a bare stripe at the seam or rim.
Safe zones: protect the marks you cannot reprint
The safe zone is the inner margin where logos, sponsor names, and mandatory copy must stay — clear of fold lines, glue flaps, perforations, and trim variance. Working guidance for cartons keeps critical content 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3–6 mm) inside folds and trims.
For multi-sponsor layouts, apply the safe zone to every mark individually:
- Each sponsor lockup sits fully inside the safe area, with its own brand clear-space respected.
- No critical artwork crosses a fold, lands on a glue tab, or overlaps a perforation.
- Barcodes and regulatory copy sit on stable flat panels — never on glue areas or tear strips.
