Peelable Lidding Film Explained: Easy-Open Tray Seals Rated for Frozen Storage and Microwave Reheating
**Summary:** Peelable lidding film is what lets a sealed tray survive freezing and reheating yet open by hand in one clean pull. This guide explains how peelable seals work, how peel force is specified, and how to pick a construction that matches your tray material and reheating path.
What "peelable" actually means
A peelable lidding film forms a cohesive seal that separates cleanly when pulled — the sealant layer splits inside itself rather than staying bonded to the tray rim. That is the difference from a welding (non-peelable) seal, which forms a permanent bond for tamper evidence or maximum seal strength. For most retail and meal-program trays, peelable is preferred, because the end user opens the package by hand.
The engineering sits in the sealant layer. Its formulation controls two values: peel initiation (the force to start the peel) and peel propagation (the force that carries it around the rim). Well-tuned film peels in one piece, without stringing, shredding, or residue on the flange.
Peel force is a specification, not a feel
Peel strength is measured in newtons per seal width — commercial films commonly quote customizable ranges around 8–20 N/15mm. Light retail portions sit at the low end; heavier products or tamper-evident applications at the high end. The right number depends on the user: senior meal programs and accessibility-focused products specify the easy end of the range and verify with real users, while institutional distribution may accept stronger seals.
Because peel force interacts with sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, flange contamination, and even storage duration, the specification should be validated with a peel test on your actual tray and product before full production — not taken from a datasheet alone.
Matching construction to tray and reheating path
Peelable films are built for specific tray families — common constructions bond to PA/PE, APET, CPET, and PP trays, with heat-seal windows around 140–180°C depending on the system. Beyond the seal, the rest of the construction decides the reheating story:
- Frozen storage through microwave: film and tray must tolerate freezer temperatures without embrittlement and microwave reheating without delamination. Dedicated grades exist for exactly this duty cycle.
