# PET Topseal Film for Heat-Sealed Trays: Balancing Peel Force, Leak Resistance and Antifog Clarity

**Summary:** PET topseal film decides how a sealed tray looks, protects, and opens. This guide explains how the PET/PE construction works, where peel force and leak resistance trade against each other, and how antifog performance fits ready-meal and fresh-food trays.

## What PET topseal film is and why it dominates tray sealing

PET topseal film — also called lidding or sealing film — is the top web that closes trays on tray sealers and flowpack lines. Its construction is a dimensionally stable PET outer layer bonded to a sealing layer of PE or sealing lacquer that bonds to the tray rim during sealing. That structure explains its popularity: the PET layer runs at high cycle rates on sealing machines, prints brilliantly for branding, resists puncture, and shows the product with crystal clarity, while the sealant layer carries the peel and seal behavior.

Depending on the sealing layer, PET topseal bonds to PET and APET trays, PP trays, board-based trays with PET or PE coating, and CPET trays for oven-ready meals — one film family covering most tray programs, including MAP (modified atmosphere) applications with barrier versions.

## Peel force versus leak resistance: the deliberate balance

Peelable topseal splits into easy peel and medium peel grades, set through the sealant formulation. The balance is deliberate:

- **Easy peel** suits consumer packaging, senior programs, and accessibility needs — opening without tools, without fibre tear, without shredding.
- **Medium peel** buys higher tightness for heavier contents, liquid-rich foods, and demanding distribution.
- **Fully sealing (non-peelable)** grades serve frozen and transport packaging where opening convenience does not matter.

Leak resistance does not come from raw seal strength alone. It comes from a seal window wide enough to stay intact when temperature, pressure, line speed, and flange contamination vary in production, plus validation of the filled pack through stacking, vibration, frozen storage, and reheating. A well-specified easy-peel system remains hermetic in the cold chain and still opens cleanly at the table — the two goals are compatible when the sealant layer is engineered for both.

## Antifog: the clarity requirement in chilled display

Temperature swings between cold store, cabinet, and the consumer's hands condense water vapor on any film surface. Untreated, that condensation forms droplets that scatter light and hide the product. An antifog finish on the sealing side makes condensation spread into an invisible, transparent layer instead, keeping meat, salads, and ready meals visible through the entire cold chain — practically mandatory for chilled fresh produce, and a sales-lift on any tray where the customer sees the food.

Antifog combines freely with peelable seals and MAP barrier layers; it is a surface treatment decision, not a construction compromise.

## Specifying the film against your machine and tray

The professional specification covers: tray material and flange geometry; target peel class; sealing temperature window matched to your tray sealer (commercial PET topseal grades run roughly 140–190°C); film thickness (typical grades run from about 24 to 75 µm); web width slit to your machine; antifog yes/no; and barrier or micro-perforation for MAP or breathing produce. Then validate with a seal and peel test on your tray and machine before series production.

## Match topseal film to your tray line

TakeawayPack supplies CPET, PP, and APET meal trays with matched PET topseal lidding film through its manufacturing partners — peelable, fully sealing, antifog, and MAP-barrier grades, slit to your sealer's web width.
