  5. **Does the evidence cover the finished article?** A resin-process file does not by itself document the final cup’s construction, additives, colorants, printing, coatings, lids, or conversion controls.

The correct conclusion may be that a document supports a defined recycling process under defined conditions—not that it automatically clears the private-label cup you plan to distribute.

Ask how the recycling process was shown to control contaminants

For secondary or tertiary recycling, ask the supplier for a concise technical package that explains how the recycling process was evaluated. One established approach is surrogate-contaminant or “challenge” testing: polymer is exposed to representative contaminants, run through the recycling process, and analyzed to measure contaminant reduction.

A useful review request should ask for:

  • the test protocol and laboratory identity;
  • the surrogate categories and why they were selected;
  • the challenge conditions, including time and temperature;
  • sampling points or the final-process measurement point;
  • the measured reduction results and their interpretation; and
  • the relationship between the tested process and the current production process.

This is not a request for a generic certificate. It is a request to establish that the evidence belongs to the supplier’s current process and supports the intended food-contact application.

Verify the real cup configuration, not only the recycled resin
