Start with the rim, not cup capacity
An 8 oz or 12 oz label describes serving volume. It does not identify lid fit, sleeve fit or a safe substitution. For each stocked cup, approve the exact lid and sleeve combination, then keep that relationship visible in purchasing and warehousing.
The buying unit is an approved rim family: a defined cup variant, matching lid option, relevant sleeve or carrier, and the service condition in which the combination was checked.
Build and test one record per family
Record the cup identifier and serving use, rim and closure specification, approved lid option, sleeve or carrier relationship, and test condition. Treat hot versus cold use, changed lid styles, cup-wall changes and multi-drink carrying as separate decisions.
Use normal fill and service conditions. If capacities are expected to share a lid or sleeve, test each intended combination. A proposed substitute is a new family unless it is explicitly supported by the approved map. Related: the lid-family test.
